Question:-
Most of the classrooms in Nepal consist of learners from
different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Due to mother tongue
influence, each learner may perceive English language as difficult
subject. In such a situation how should a teacher cater for the need of
individual student and how should a school ensure the supply of
appropriate learning materials and their use of relevant techniques.
Ans:-
Nepal is a multilingual country. People speaking different language
live here. Obviously, the children from multiple cultures and ethnic
backgrounds join the same schools. It is impossible to provide a
separate schooling system for a student from a different linguistic
background in the context of Nepal. Furthermore, Nepali has been used as
a widely used link language in Nepal. It is the language of instruction
and communication among different ethnic group and in offices, schools,
colleges, media, etc. Therefore, everybody is more or less equally
competent in Nepali language. In spite of this reality, the students
with other language backgrounds have to definitely struggle more
compared to those who have Nepali as their mother tongue. Students with
other language backgrounds are heavily influenced by their mother tongue
especially in the case of pronunciation, words which may or may not
correspond to the words of their language quite differently and mostly
when grammatical structures do not match with those of their languages.
This is called skewing. Those students have to maintain a balance
between their own language and Nepali and at the same time they have to
try to find out the meaning of English. The meaning of English gets
divided between two languages.
There is a natural situation for the children every time to get natural
way of language learning in natural situations. English is obviously L2
for the Nepalese children which they have to acquire in a controlled
situation. The children take English language as a difficult subject
because of the difference in culture, lifestyle and languages.
In this type of situation the ELT teacher should create natural situations in and out of the classroom,
- Maximum use the teaching materials including OHP, tape recorder, etc. to provide the right and natural accent,
- Provide more exposure in English,
- Reward the students rather than giving punishment,
- Teach English in Nepali situations,
- Separate the students according to their language and group them and teach them,
- Frequently evaluate their performance,
- Find out their problems,
- Try to solve their problems,
- Use student centered methods,
Similarly the school management committee should:-
- Provide relevant teaching materials,
- Allocate budget for materials,
- Award the students for their best performance,
- Take students to participate in English programmed,
- Organize the programme like-debate, speech, poem recitation, etc.
- Organize training's for the teachers to familiarize the resent methods and techniques,
- Encourage the teachers with incentives and with other facilities,
- Do effective monitoring,
- Organize micro teaching among the English language teachers.
